The research activity of the Institute of System Biology and Ecology (ISBE) is focused on the analysis of the behaviour of natural systems, which are characterised by spatial and functional dynamics, which is, with some degree of simplification, observable on the basis of mass, energy and information flux analysis. The scientific activity of ISBE is oriented on the systems approach which is connected to methodological platform of biology/ecology systems discipline. Spin-off activities and industrial projects are other features of which PSI is an example.

ISBE focuses on the investigation of the interaction of plants with various stress factors, the regulation of the primary phototrophic metabolism due to uncomfortable and stress conditions and early detection of the stresses; all expressed by measuring optical reporter signals in static or dynamic light environments on different hierarchical level, from cells to canopy. Multi-disciplinarily, novel methods and development of original instrumentation for fluorescence and reflectance measurements both in laboratory and in the field have been the hallmarks of their research.

The department of Biological Dynamics from ISBE published recently 17 papers and 4 book chapters related to the development and application of chlorophyll fluorescence technique for an early detection of stress in vegetal species
